An Opposition pledge to spend an extra $5 million buying out more fishing effort from Moreton Bay has been welcomed by the Queensland Seafood Industry Association (QSIA).

QSIA President Neil Green said an important part of the scheme was to help fishing families restructure their businesses properly and leave the industry, if necessary, with dignity.

Great news for seafood lovers: fresh local barramundi is back on the menu with the opening of the 2009 fishing season round the Queensland coast this week.

Queensland Seafood Industry Association (QSIA) President Neil Green said the Queensland east coast barra fishing season re-opens from midday today (Sunday February 1) and from tomorrow (Monday February 2) in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

A proposal for the Federal Government to cut back the State's east coast fish catch by another 1.6 million kilograms a year could put hundreds of Queenslanders out of work.

Queensland Seafood Industry Association (QSIA) President Neil Green said today a proposed 40% cutback in Queensland east coast net catches of sharks could in fact reduce other net-caught fish landings by 40% also.

Following the weekend Annual General Meeting of the Queensland Seafood Industry Association (QSIA), an expanded Board of Directors has been elected by members for the next 12 months.

QSIA President Mr Neil Green said the Directors brought to the Board a wide array of valuable skills, as well as enormous professional experience and qualifications.

The Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries has released the East Coast Inshore Fin Fishery Plan. The initial QSIA media response is available here and we will be making further statements over the weekend on the Commonwealth’s involvement in the Plan.
