Clean Green Project - Queensland Prawns

There is no doubt the Australian prawn sector is under some pressure from competition from cheap imported farmed prawns with increasing community concerns over perceptions of adverse environmental impact.

The Queensland Prawns Clean Green Project is about developing quality standards for Queensland prawns to assist with a clean green promotional strategy for the industry. Queensland prawns are a demonstrably superior product and current fishing practices conform to the high standards demanded by the super premium fine dining market both nationally and internationally.

Naturally Queenslanders love their prawns and this project will add value to what is already an iconic Queensland seafood delicacy.

The project has been developed in consultation with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation whose strategies of incorporating a whole supply chain approach to improve value, quality and market access will enable Queensland prawns to compete more effectively in the global seafood markets.

Further, this project builds on the success of the Clean Green Southern Rock Lobster program which yielded more than 20% net increase in profitability in the sector. This project targets similar objectives.
